Another reason it’s advantageous for companies to promote remote work, in addition to the benefits in a competitive talent market for attracting and retaining top-notch employees, is that remote workplaces cut down overhead costs. Office space is a significant cost, especially in major technology epicenters like San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and NYC. Switching to a remote workforce is more cost efficient. Plus these big-city based companies can hire workers in cities were the cost of living is lower, allowing them to compensate their employees at the very top 5% of or even above market for less than relocating people to places where salaries are much higher because of the cost of living.
