I completely relate to your situation, and have started keeping a short list, too. I restrict myself to only three to-do’s a day. Obviously, I have more, but I still myself “everything else is extra.” I also shoot to have at least one of those three items done before 11:00 am.
With that said, that’s just my handwritten to-do’s. It doesn’t count my cheat, which is a crazy long task list on Asana.
