I think you bring up a great point, and I think a student schedule is an excellent model. It allows for flexibility, change, and working through multiple types of projects, ideas, and work. Another interesting model in a startup work environment is one that splits time between 70% work and 30% learning. This includes independent projects, educational programs and workshops, reading, and informational meetings into the fold of working, and much of this involves self-direction work weekly check-in’s at the end of the week. I’ve incorporated this approach with interns and fellows, and I’m seeing positive results and balanced schedules.
