One of the things I think can be really helpful in this area is benchmarking. I’d love to see studies that show how women negotiate when faced with benchmarks of how others were paid for those positions, especially those they know in their networks. I hypothesize that understanding your objective market worth contextualized by those you know would help women believe they deserve more and as a result, negotiation higher. It wasn’t until I really started evaluating compensation data for others that I started to feel I could or should be negotiating harder.
