You are spot on that dissent is a responsibility. But it’s a hard one to shoulder, and when you’re the only person who stands up and dissents, you can feel at best like a wet blanket and at worst like an ungrateful outlier in danger of losing your opportunity. I’ve been a dissenter, and I’ve particularly struggled with this.

The advice I’ve gotten that has mostly worked on culture change is that if you can’t change the CEOs mind, you have to become a kind of CEO. Or more specifically, a team leader. Ask for full-time hires, interns, fellows, apprentices, etc. and then model out the behaviors you want to see culturally. Additionally start testing and piloting those programmatic solutions you’d like to see happen to show that cultural shift is possible and can produce positive outcomes.
